School Profile

Kinnelon High School is proud of its tradition of excellence in academics, the arts and athletics. In addition to an extensive array of honors, college preparatory, and foundations courses, course offerings include 30 AP courses and  2 courses credited through Syracuse University. A  freshmen learning community for college prep students incorporates the use of IPADS while a sophomore community integrates a study skills  program  connected to  Syracuse University. A life skills program is provided for students to help prepare them to live productive and independent lives. The academic program, which incorporates a wide variety of electives typically found only in a large high school, includes a four year sequence in Latin, Business Education, Architecture/ Technology, TV Media , Art and each major discipline.  A number of students take advantage of Virtual High School to broaden their choices further, while others develop their occupational skills by participating in a shared program with Morris County Technical school.  Finally, some seniors participate in a program with County College of Morris to assist with their transition to college academics.

Kinnelon High School has multiple computer sites, laptop carts for each department, computer and Smart Board equipment in each classroom, and a Computer Aided Drafting room with eighteen workstations.  In addition, we have a television studio, state of the art band room, a technology lab, a media center/library with computers and full internet access, two gymnasiums, and a fitness center.

In addition to a comprehensive curriculum, Kinnelon High School supports a broad program of both athletic and co-curricular activities. A full complement of Fall, Winter, and Spring interscholastic Varsity and JV sports is offered.  A large number of students participate in community service activities through Social Outreach, Peer Leadership, and other clubs and teams. In addition, Kinnelon High School students participate in after-school programs that include competitive academic teams, three school newspaper publications and six honor societies.  Students and teams participating in all of these areas continue to win awards and recognition for their academic, musical and athletic achievements.  Athletes, performing arts students and successful academic students are recognized at the local, state and national levels.

Our commitment to professional growth is evidenced by the training the teachers at Kinnelon High School are receiving to develop their technology skills, so they integrate technology into their classes and make appropriate information available to parents and students. Although over 70% of our staff has earned advanced degrees, we are committed to providing faculty with the support and opportunities they need to teach the standards, differentiate instruction, incorporate 21st Century skills, and to prepare our students with the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in future educational and career endeavors.

Kinnelon High School operates a modified rotating block schedule.  Our school day consists of six instructional class periods, each approximately sixty minutes in length.  The students’ eight classes meet on a rotating four-day schedule.  Longer class periods have enabled the faculty to institute changes in instructional strategies, such as alternative assessments and cooperative group learning.

Our honor code, a high participation rate in community senior service ventures, as well as  special programs offered throughout the year funded with community support,  help prepare students to be ethical and well-rounded leaders and involved citizens. Please know that our goal is to continue to provide opportunities for success for all of our students.
