Welcome to the KHS World Language Department!
The Kinnelon Public Schools World Language Department is dedicated to fostering global citizenship and cultural understanding through the study of world languages. Whether you're learning Spanish, French, or Latin, our courses are designed to build communication skills, deepen cultural appreciation, and open doors to international experiences. We offer Spanish instruction from Kindergarten through Grade 4 and again in Grades 6–12, while French is available for students in Grades 5–12. At the high school level, students also have the opportunity to study Latin, with courses available through the AP level. With passionate instructors and engaging curriculum, we aim to inspire curiosity, confidence, and connection across cultures. In our classrooms, students engage in meaningful communication by building proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in the target language. With a focus on real-world communication and authentic materials, we aim to equip students with the tools to connect across cultures and thrive in a diverse, interconnected world. Join us as we explore the richness of language and the power it has to bring the world closer together!

Course Offerings
French, Latin and Spanish are World Language courses offered to Advanced Placement levels at Kinnelon High School. A total of 10 credits of a World Language are required for graduation. Students are encouraged to select one or more languages.
The study of a World Language provides an opportunity for students to develop proficiency in the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in a language other than their native English. Through the application of these skills, students will recognize the contrasts and similarities that exist between their native cultural pattern and that of another country. A variety of techniques and methods are used to achieve these objectives.
In addition, many four-year colleges and universities recommend or require a minimum of two years of the same language. All three languages offered at Kinnelon High School, French, Latin and Spanish (Levels CP through AP), meet the World Language requirement for college admission and high school graduation requirement. Students may enroll in more than one language as an additional elective.

The Spanish Honor Society is an honor society for those in a secondary school setting for eligible students who have maintained an honor average in the study of Spanish or Portuguese for a minimum of three semesters and are in the 10th grade or higher. The definition of "honor grade” is left to the discretion of each chapter. It should be remembered that the SHH is an honor society for those students of high academic achievement. Therefore, since the rigor of a college prep class differs from an honors course the following grade averages are set in place:
Honors level students have to have a 90 average over 6 consecutive marking periods and CP students have to have a 95 average over 6 consecutive marking periods. All students have to continue taking Spanish until senior year to graduate with honor cords as long as a course is offered at their level. In addition, they have to be of good character and academic standing.
Our chapter, La Celestina has been involved for over 10 years in providing underprivileged families in the Paterson NJ area with gifts for the holiday season through the Dare to Be You family rehabilitation program. In addition, the SHS recently participated in our former student's youth program, Youth For Change NJ to help provide PPE and other necessary goods to families in need in Paterson.
Academically, the SHS provides tutoring for all levels of Spanish in the middle and high school setting.
Seal of Biliteracy
The New Jersey Department of Education (DOE) awards the State Seal of Biliteracy to graduating high school students who can demonstrate proficiency in English in addition to one or more world languages. Assessments will be provided by the school and we currently offer a Seal of Biliteracy in French, Latin, and Spanish. Students will receive the Seal of Biliteracy on the official transcript. Students must demonstrate Intermediate Mid linguistic proficiency level (or higher) in the world language assessed using a DOE-approved assessment (N.J.A.C. 6A:8-5.3(f)) . Students enrolled in Spanish 5AP, French 5AP and Latin 4AP are eligible to take a state approved assessment for the NJ Seal of Biliteracy. Additional languages are offered in Korean, Russian, Polish, Arabic, Hindi and many more. Students interested in pursuing an additional language may take an approved assessment in the spring of their junior year or the winter of their senior year to qualify for the Seal of Biliteracy. If interested, please reach out to the Department Chair of World Languages to set up the test administration.
